The full-scale premiere of the JAC S4 took place in the second half of November 2018 at the stands of the Guangzhou International Motor Show, but it was declassified on the Web a few weeks before this event - in the last days of October. This five-door was the first production model of the Chinese automaker to try on a new corporate design for the exterior and interior, which was tested back in 2016 on the SC-5 concept.

Exterior

The compact SUV from the Middle Kingdom boasts an attractive, modern and rather striking appearance, in which there are no obvious borrowings. The moderately spectacular front end of the five-door is decorated with frowning headlights of a complex shape, interconnected by a chrome bar, a fine-mesh "hexagon" of the radiator grille and a relief knocked down bumper, and its fried stern carries elegant lanterns (all also with a horizontal strip between them) and a neat trunk lid ...

The crossover is no less interesting in profile, and all thanks to the balanced and energetic outlines with a sloping roofline, blackened frames of side windows and rear roof pillars and a "flying" window sill contour, which are expressively added by "rectangular" wheel arches and relief splashes on the sides.

Dimensions and weight

In terms of its dimensions, the JAC S4 fully complies with the canons of the compact segment: it stretches 4410 mm in length, reaches 1800 mm in width, and fits in 1660 mm in height. The distance between the wheelsets is 2620 mm for the off-road vehicle, and its ground clearance is 200 mm.

The curb weight of the car varies from 1325 to 1365 kg, depending on the modification.

Interior

The interior of the compact SUV, although somewhat simple in appearance (especially in the basic equipment), is tailored according to fashionable patterns - in the "top" trim levels, for example, a 10.25-inch screen of the infotainment complex sticks out above the center console, under which there is a full touch panel climate control and audio system control.

A bit of sportiness in the decoration of the five-door is extolled by a three-spoke multi-steering wheel with pronounced tides in the area of ​​correct grip and a "beveled" rim in the lower part, while a laconic (but informative and readable) instrument cluster with a pair of analog scales and a modest "window" of the onboard computer between them a little out of the general picture.

According to the passport, the JAC S4 salon is for five. In its front part there are stylish-looking chairs with a well-developed side profile, sufficient adjustment intervals and heating.

On the second row there is an ergonomically profiled sofa, an almost flat floor and a normal supply of free space (even for three adult passengers), but without any frills (there are no ventilation deflectors, no cup holders, no armrest).

In the arsenal of a compact crossover, there is a trunk of almost the correct shape (however, the wheel arches still protrude slightly inward), the volume of which in normal condition amounts to 500 liters.

The rear sofa folds down in two unequal sections (in the ratio "60:40") into a flat area, as a result of which the compartment capacity increases to 1050 liters.

Under the raised floor there is a small spare wheel, tools and an additional niche (with an organizer) for small things.

Specifications

For the JAC S4, two in-line four-cylinder petrol engines are offered, which are combined with a 6-speed manual transmission or continuously variable variator and an exclusively front-wheel drive transmission:

  • By default, the car is "armed" with an atmospheric unit with a working volume of 1.6 liters with distributed fuel injection, a 16-valve DOHC timing belt and a variable valve timing system, generating 120 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 150 Nm of torque at 3500-4500 rpm ...
  • More powerful versions are equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, direct "power", variable valve timing at the inlet and outlet and 16-valve DOHC type timing, which produces 150 hp. at 5500 rpm and 210 Nm of torque at 2000-4500 rpm.

Design

At the heart of JAC S4 is a front-wheel drive "bogie" with a supporting body structure, in the power structure of which high-strength grades of steel are widely used.

An independent MacPherson-type suspension with an anti-roll bar is installed on the front axle of the car, and a semi-independent architecture with a torsion beam is applied at the rear.

By default, the crossover is equipped with a rack and pinion steering gear with an electric power steering, and disc brakes (ventilated at the front) are enclosed on all its wheels, working in conjunction with ABS, EBD and other modern electronics.

Options and prices

In the foreseeable future, the JAC S4 should reach the Russian market, while in its homeland - in the Middle Kingdom - it is sold at a price of 67,800 to 98,800 yuan (≈632-920 thousand rubles).

  • In the "base", the compact SUV has: front airbags, 17-inch alloy wheels, ABS, EBD, ESP, a tire pressure monitoring system, four power windows, air conditioning, an audio system with four speakers, an immobilizer and some other equipment.
  • The "top" version boasts: 18-inch wheels, LED headlights and lanterns, a media center with a 10.25-inch screen, "leather" trim, an electric sunroof, a rear-view camera, keyless entry and engine start, an electronic handbrake , heated front seats and other modern "bells and whistles".
